The science is simple and unforgiving. Water works its way into the tiny void of a chip. When the temperature drops overnight, that water freezes and expands by roughly nine percent, pushing outward against the glass from the inside.
That expansion is a wedge. A chip that stayed stable all summer can crack and spread after one or two cold nights. Is there a single impact point rather than a spreading web

Do not wait for a warning sign, because the spread from chip to crack often happens overnight with no notice
